Description:

The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based medieval fantasy strategy game played on a hex-grid. It involves managing a "king" unit and several other units to achieve some objective.

During a game, the player must control villages to finance their (usually) growing army. With this army, for most levels the player must defeat the enemy king(s). There are standard aspects of a strategy game, units have different purposes, there are terrain balances, strategic positions, etc. What makes Battle for Wesnoth unique among open-source games is that it offers a relatively high variety while maintaining a good balance.

Overall, Battle for Wesnoth is a highly recommended to anybody who loves a good strategy game. Congratulations to the developers!

There are several little things that make Battle for Wesnoth an interesting turn-based strategy game. Every unit can gain experience and go up levels, so you end up making strategies involving conserving your better, more experienced units and using "cannon-fodder" much more than in other games. Also each unit can gain "traits" such as fast or resilient, making even units of the same type different.

The AI in the game is quite impressive, making effective use of terrain and maneuvering tactics. This allows the single player mode to be very interesting and with a large number of campaigns easily downloadable, Battle for Wesnoth has a great single-player replay value.

The graphics in the game are not very good, at least by today's standards. At first glance, one could mistake the game for a classic Super Nintendo game. This does not subtract from gameplay though, so one can still enjoy the game without any fancy graphics.

Battle for Wesnoth has a built-in option to download user-built campaigns from the Internet. There are many different campaigns currently available for anybody to try, however as with many user-made campaigns, they are not very long and generally lack the professional air that the main campaign has. Most of them are still fun, but you'll have to put up with some cheesy dialogue sometimes.

The major thing that makes Battle for Wesnoth great is the feeling of "completeness" when playing it. Most open-source games have something about them that feels broken, whether it is bugs or bad user-interface. Battle for Wesnoth has none of this. The tutorial missions are an excellent introduction to the game, the user interface is solid and the game is (as far as we could tell) bug free.
